Yep, those are my new business cards! Sorry bout the pixelatedness. For some reason natural light is not working with me today. Nor is the macro function of my camera. I think they're just on some mood-swing.

Anyway, upon closer inspection, the card features a new URL. Yes, I'll be moving this LogoswithLove site to be part of a bigger inspiration-catalogue and projects site I'll be calling www.thefozzybook.com. So yey! My own domain!

modern wedding invitations

I wrote about how more and more creative wedding paperie has gotten late last year. And yep, the fresh takes just keep on coming! Though I'm still a fan of the simple classics, I do get thrills every time I see unique, cute , and "wow my mom would've never allowed that" designs.

The color combinations are contemporary, the typography choices and layouts are streamlined and are absolute GENIUS. I wish we could see more of these clean, smart invites and less of those with floating pixelized photos fading pretentiously with some white glow (I'm sorry, I just had to say it).

For the past couple of weeks I've been working with Din, a bride who was referred to me by fellow FPN member Leigh Reyes. She had been asking around for some time for a calligrapher, because she wanted the pleasant surprise of elegantly hand-lettered names on her invitations.

Her palette was a lovely concoction of slate-blue, light green and coffee brown. And we chose brown as the ink color to set the calligraphy on her cream envelopes. She also told me she liked swirls and loops, and if I could get as much of those as I write, that would be great.

This week, I turned over the 135 written envelopes to her. I do hope those who receive them like what they see :)

a different kind of blue

I made these mood boards to help a reader a few weeks back, and I think it would be nice to share. They were going to have a December wedding, and were thinking of using blue as their main color because it was "winter" and all. I have nothing against blue and silver as a combination because many weddings have used that palette for very elegant winter themes. However, the many-ness of it makes me enjoy looking for refreshing new options.

She (reader) was undecided about her color palette and emailed me together with a monogram test request to make some recommendations. Basing it from a key photo that had blue as the dominant tone, here are some blue alternative palettes you bride-to-be's might want to consider.

A cool, clean slate.

It's somewhat periwinkle, a deep grey-blue with a tinge of purple. Add a punch of contrast with charcoal and ivory as your highlight hues. The palette is very polished, and is versatile enough to go from minimalist-contemporary to ornate-victorian.

A sunny winter afternoon.

The board is a warmer, more playful combination because of the dash of yellow mixed into the palette. Making for teal and mustard as your key colors. And a light, brown-grey to anchor the theme. I could so imagine this as a garden or beach wedding, or even a chic set-up in a rustic ballroom.

Found these lovely make-up tutorials whilst tumbling along my Tumblr dashboard. I personally couldn't do a smokey eye to save my life. So I vowed to have one for my wedding, even if it was 8 o'clock in the morning *grins*.

I believe that make-up is just as important as the wedding dress you're going to be wearing. And meeting "the one" is just as vital as the groom you'll be wedded to. Even if the make-up test does cost quite a bit of money, I would highly recommend it especially if you haven't worked with them before. It's the only way you could really get a feel of the person who'll be painting your face for this fairytale day. Shortlist HMUA's based on their portfolios, and do the test. As much as two, so you could see which one will really understand you.

In the meantime, perhaps you could practice on yourself (since we girls love doing that anyway). Video tutorials are the greatest.

hand-lettered envelopes

My best friend and I just rekindled the card-writing exchanges we used to do back in high school. It's extra exciting for me now since I could do calligraphy to address my card.

I used an Esterbrook 761 flexible nib and a varying mix of blue and pink gouache to create different shades of purple as I wrote along. For my address, I chose to stick with pastel pink.

I secretly wish I had the power to turn back time to when I was doing the addressing for our wedding envelopes. All I had was a felt-tip italic nib, which did the job, really. But it missed the elegance of flowing ink. Or maybe I'm just blaming my lack of script technique on the felt. Or maybe there is something to silver vs. felt.

Nonetheless, if you'd like to have hand-addressed wedding envelopes or any form of calligraphy for your wedding (or whatever event you may have), do drop me a mail. We could chat, I could do a demo, show you the nibs. I could do the same if you just wanted to learn as well.

I would have to admit that technology has been taking sort of a passenger's seat lately, in favor of my vintage flexible nibs (the set I previously blogged about). I've been studying Copperplate script and flourishing, as an addition to the modern style that I used to do. Though it seems that I'm mixing in some hints of Spencerian... more practice needed!

Below are writing samples using an Esterbrook 556 nib and a variation between blue and dark pink gouache. I didn't have my poetic brain screwed on, so I just borrowed lyrics from James Morrison, Keane and some Alicia Keys (in a light coffee color mix).

I cannot express how much I love writing. And I do hope that people never forget the rawness of a hand-written note. It has so much emotion within the lines, and I think it's what makes them extra pretty.

for a music themed wedding

While surfing for graphic inspiration on Abduzeedo I came across a feature on vintage music tags for their typography inspiration collection. It brought me back to when I studied piano, and reminded me of how immensely romantic the sound of a classical instrument is.

*lightbulb moment* It would be perfect for a wedding!

I would suppose a lot of couples have music in common. Or some form of hobby influenced by it. And it made me wonder why I haven't seen a lot of weddings that would have music as a theme. A lot having to do with photography, travel, pets. Or maybe I haven't been looking so much.

Anyway, onto the music tags. They are intended to be gift tags. But looking at how organic and rustic sheet music is, it can cascade beautifully to whatever paperie there is on your wedding. They are made out of vintage sheets cut to shape then glued onto both sides of reused paper.

To customize for your wedding I'd suggest to print your monogram or perhaps a thank you note and glue that on the other side instead. Or make a separate tag and tie them together. It's such a lovely conversation piece, and would work very well if you were planning on having a classic or vintage feel for your wedding.

I'm so in love with the idea that I googled more pretty things related to sheet music. Hope you are as well inspired by the loveliness.

I would've liked to have a gothic wedding. Or not really complete gothic. More of classic with a tinge of freaky. I would bet that my mother would absolutely flip if I actually went thru with that half of my wedding planning notebook.

Months ago, I purchased 10 vintage nibs over at the Fountain Pen Network. It came with a simple plastic nib holder, and this Christmas, my sister gave me this lovely wooden holder. It even had this pretty marble-like paint of blue and green. The slim wood rests well against the hand, and it feels so much better than plastic. It is totally and undescribably thrilling!

I mixed up some pink gouache and brushed a good amount on the nib to start writing. The nibs are not as smooth as my flexible fountain pens, and I really need to be careful not to puncture the paper. Or let the paper get too wet that fibers come loose and snag onto the tip. Which reminds me, perhaps I will need to find more suitable paper.

Nibs and holders are available from Scribe Writing Essentials. The gouache I got from National Bookstore. They have some in tubes and as well as in plates (ala watercolor). Scribe also has calligraphy inks available. There are also metallic inks that can be purchased as well from Fully Booked High Street. Perhaps that would be my next project.

reading the lines differently

Browsing through my favorite paperie sites, I'm always struck by how creative wedding invitations are getting to be. Of course we will still be held by the sweetness of the traditional, but there's no denying that we'd all utter "I wish I could do that" or "I wish I did that" when faced with the contemporary work out there. And I'm not even talking about passports or themed movie tickets.

These are actually just simple new ways of looking at an invitation layout. The smart combination of fonts and colors. Yes, block wide letters can go with elegant flowing script. From simple, to utterly overflowing with prettiness. And mind you, they're still traditional letterpress. Which is all the more lovely.

I'm such a little girl for delicate and dainty details. When I saw Zac Posen's 2011 Resort Collection, I fell absolutely in love. The softness is adorable. The lightness screams femininity. I imagine an entourage walking by the seaside, with draped tulle being swayed comfortingly by the salty breeze.

I still owe the October card, I know. However I was just struck by the loveliness of the Spring 2011 collection of Lanvin, particularly this ensemble. It's got that carefree-ness of the season without the brights or the petals. It's like the light breeze carrying little leaves that suddenly turned into a dress. It's got enough sunshine to make you feel sunkissed without making your audience squint.

Me thinks it is a potential color palette for a nice quaint wedding (or a big yet warm gathering). Some kind of mustard, with an old mint green. Paired with other pretty things surfed across the web, I'd actually love this for a wedding! If I could ever have a second ceremony, this would be my theme!

Since having uncovered my old calligraphy set and my dad's old fountain pens, the fingers have not stopped clicking on different calligraphy and FP websites. Links and links later, I happily stumbled upon the lovely, lovely portfolio of Paperfinger.

It's really nice to see how the art of beautiful hand-written words is very much alive. And their modern take on calligraphy is so refreshing while still maintaining that old, romantic charm. I've noticed that a lot of weddings abroad still address envelopes and even invitations or thank you cards by hand, and I do hope that the raw appeal of such things hop on over to our shores. It's one thing to use a calligraphy-inspired or handwritten font (don't get me wrong, I'm an avid fan of these types), but it's another thing to actually feel and see ink done by hand. I feel that it adds a little bit of love and passion. I am wishing that in my quest to study lettering and calligraphy, I could open a similar service here (wish wish wish!).

Anyway, to the actual feature of this post. I'm reposting some of the shop's work on logo design, that I hope will inspire soon-to-be-wed couples (and me!).

I've always been a paper and notebook whore. And because of that, some kind of a pen-whore as well. I remember when text messages were too expensive to send a little "hello" to the person sitting just next to you. And there was that lady at the pager company who always got your messages wrong. So the best thing was to pass colorful post-its with handwritten notes of nonsense, with a secret prayer that it won't be intercepted by your buttoned-up professor. Soon, we got sick of just black and blue pens. And those scented ones were okay at first, but later on drove our sinuses up the wall.

Then, someone discovered colored gel pens. And then they even had some with glitters. It was like writing with nailpolish. Or trying on a whole palette of lipstick all at the same time. I remember having a whole satchel of different brands, of all possible shades of purple and gold. The white pen over black paper was such an innovation, it was like walking on the moon. I was later given a set of calligraphy pens and parchment paper which I enjoyed thoroughly, until it just wasn't "in" enough to compete with the neon pinks and greens of the ballpoint world.

Somewhere along the way, writing by hand became a chore. And those lovely pens got stashed in some obscure drawer in our attic. We exchanged emails for cards, text messages and chat for letter narratives. My prolific notetaking was replaced by frantic typing (I'd like to thank my piano lessons as well for my finger dexterity). At some point, writing was just painful.

But, passions will always find a way to creep into your life, I suppose. Preparing for our wedding, we decided to address our invitations by hand, instead of printing on stickers or feeding the envelopes into the printer. Also driven by the fact that the paper we chose isn't printer-friendly. So there I was, buying calligraphy pens and writing on 200++ envelopes.

And now that the wedding's done, here I am back-stroking in thousands of typefaces to design custom logos for soon-to-wed couples. The love for beautifully written and designed letters reawakened, and I'm enjoying it immensely. I remembered the old calligraphy kit I had when I was in high school and decided to take a chance at looking for it in our attic. Lo and behold, it's still there! Nibs are still okay, the plastic pen casing still intact and the inks are still liquid (miraculously).

Right now I'm itching to go home and practice with my old-new babies. I can imagine ink-blotted pages and dye on my pinky's knuckles. It's so exciting (and refreshing), welcoming the art of writing back into my life.

Who knows, maybe I'll expand to hand-written invitations and logo designs. Tee hee.

S is for the sweetness, the swirls and the soulful winds of our formal entry into the holiday season. I was actually working on this monthly card while a storm was asserting itself outside. The palette began as a mix of grays, blues and ecru. But then again, it began to feel like a double-dreary interpretation of the moment. For some reason, fate wasn't allowing me to be that depressed. Staring at the monitor with penmouse in my hand, I was stumped.

And so I brewed a cup of coffee, sat back and took deep breaths. My fingers decided to overhaul the theme with something dainty and feminine. And in a matter of minutes, here it is. The September card.

I'm excited to say that you'll find our logoswithlove ad within the next Weddings at Work Primer! It's actually great to be part of such a wonderful network. Having been a "wawie" myself, I'd want to pay homage to all the help and warmth my fellow bride-to-be's gave. It's an overwhelming sea of support, especially during the inevitable stresses of wedding planning.

The network also served as a great launching point for this passion of mine - logo design and illustration. LogoswithLove wouldn't have been born without it! I am a firm believer that anything can inspire anything. When we were planning our wedding, we knew we wanted it to be classic touched by a theme of vintage. Going through endless swatches, it finally came down to muted gold and pewter. Friends ask me do describe what the hell that meant, and I would say, think of old book pages and tarnished silver spoons.

As part of some inspiration to start off the month, we'll be posting monthly card layouts that could serve as design and/or color cues. I was feeling relatively desaturated this afternoon, with the schizophrenic weather. The skies are grey and cloudless, while the sun is somehow shining very aggressively.

So our first monthly card is a bit straightforward and muted. Slightly art-deco because of the outline-styled monogram and background pattern. And yet classic, because of the capped serifs.

Outside, the wind is calling for rain. Inside, I'm yearning to be hugged by white fluffy clouds.

Not just for weddings, a logo can also be made for a special event or occasion. Take for example this cute little birthday party for a girl turning two. Done by Lemiga Events, the concept was Sesame Street and the birthday girl's monogram added a touch of daintiness (because she is anyway a little girl).

The monogram was used in various elements like coasters, souvenirs, decor, aside from the invitations. Sometimes these inspirational things make you think of already having kids (wait, did I really think that?).

The wedding logo, or monogram, as other people would call it, is not so different from the rest of the logos floating around in our daily lives. It will serve as your "identity" for the wedding, threading all the experiences during that day and branding it as yours. A thank you tag is just as any thank you tag until you place your monogram on it.

In this case, that project or brand is you, the couple. It may be as simple as two letters stuck together, but oddly, it's compelling enough for you (and other people) to realize that yes, it is you. I would always recommend to people to always stick with one logo. If two, they need to be variations of the same thing. Because really, you can't even imagine Coca-Cola having two logos.
